Buying Guide : Air Conditioner

Here comes another post on buying guide and it’s a season demanding “Air Conditioner”. I’ve recently bought one for myself. Just as are previous posts; this one will also focus on basics.
Why do you need an air conditioner? I am not going to waste space and your time explaining this.

Following are the factors that one should consider before buying an Air Conditioner (Split/Window):

  1. Window Vs Split
    1. Split AC is better when it comes to cooling efficiency.
    2. Split AC is less noisy as the unit is installed outside your room.
    3. Window AC is less expensive and easy to install and maintain.
    4. The regular service and gas fill is more expensive for split AC.
    5. Leakage Issue: In case of a Split AC; I have observed that water tips from the air unit during high humidity. This is caused as droplets are formed right on the face of blower.
  2. Capacity:
    1. Decide as per your room size.
    2. 1 Ton AC is suitable for 8’ * 10’ rooms and 1.5 Ton is suitable for 12’ * 15’ room.
    3. However, consider the location of room. Ex. If it’s a top floor room or sun facing room; the cooling of a lower capacity AC may not suffice.
  3. Features: Almost all units are having standardized features. In my opinion this is a factor which holds less importance.
  4. Build:
    1. Most units are equipped with Rotary compressors as they turn out to be more energy-efficient choice.
    2. Rusting Issue: This should be considered if you’re in a coastal area.
    3. Compressor Cut-Off Temp.: Every compressor has a cut-off threshold i.e. they will stop functioning when temp rises to 45 degrees or above.
  5. Power Consumption:
    1. Star Rating: This factor is extremely popular now-a-days. It represents how energy-efficient an air conditioner is.
    2. A standard calculation of bill can be done by finding product of the total hours an air conditioner runs (on cooling not fan), watts consumed and power tariff.
    3. The key here is to note the no. of hours when the air conditioner compressor is functioning.
    4. You should consider a 5 star rated product only when the consumption is extremely high. In the other case, you might end up paying an extra initial cost even though your consumption is not high enough to reflect a considerable difference in bill.
    5. Purchase a good quality and reputed stabilizer. It increases product life.
    6. Other options for electricity conservation here.
  6. Company:
    1. Check reputation as per your residence area.
    2. Hitachi & General are slightly expensive but are certainly hold an edge in terms of quality and innovation.
    3. Consider the after sales service per your area and dealer. LG is reputed for its service in most areas in India.
  7. Extended Warranty:
    1. Consider this for ease and following.
    2. Rotary compressors are not known for repair and hence are replaced.
    3. Breaking of grills due to rusting is a major concern in coastal areas.
    4. LG provides AMC options in India which includes free servicing.

  2. Hi,
I am planning to buy a 1.5 to Split Ac.
As per your observation on the various products and knowledge, Which company AC you would recommend? My Budget is 20 -30k.

    • Abraham,

We do not recommend or suggest any brands.
The idea behind our post if to follow a step by step process for short listing.
By that, you reach to a brand you can select from as per your requirements. All the best. 🙂

  3. I am living in the second floor.I am confused whether to put a split or window type AC.The mechanic says if i put a split type , service will be a problem as there is no place to keep the compressor unit. Can u please suggest an idea ?

    • Venkatesh,

If there is no place to keep the compressor unit; i doubt that it will be installed in first place.
If you get a place to install it, servicing can be tedious considering that the entire unit might have to un-mounted.
Window AC can save you from this hassle.
      All the best. 🙂

  4. Can anybody suggest me, which should be the tonnage capacity for a living room of 10’*30′ ? And which brand is best for that capacity?

  5. Is there any specific ac brands that i should go for if i am living in a coastal, saline area where there is a lot of problem of corrosion and frequent services were required for my previous voltas ac which was bad!
Also someone suggested i buy ogeneral from grey market, the imported ones!
    Is that advisable?

    • 1. Grey market, i have not been very comfortable.
      2. If service is an concern, do a local research and decide the band.
      3. Consider an AMC purchase along with product for ease.

  6. A friend of mine said, purchasing an AC from a Japanese company would be a better choice,

Like Daikin or Godrej(whose parts are from Japan)

Would u suggest on the technology?

    • Rajan, certainly have no doubts on the Japanese technology.
However, I would still suggest you to try and shortlist via the steps mentioned in the post…
In my case, there weren’t any dealers near my residence area selling daikin…Didn’t have a review from a friend who was using it…

  7. room size : 10*11 ft
sun facing only in the morning till 9;30am
weather conditions are neither humid like coastals nor dry like delhi.. more like bangalore..
    place: Belgaum (district place)
    budget limit: 30-40k
    which one would u suggest???

i do not know the after sales services of any brands..
sales executives here telling to buy either Godrej or LG of 1 tonne costing 33.5K

    thank u..

    • Prashant,
For after sales service; I will suggest you to enquire with some localites as well.
They can give you a frank feedback.
With the budget and the usage conditions you are suggesting; you can go for anything…
Try shortllisting by the post suggestions.
      All the best…

  8. Hi,

I am planning to buy a 1.5 ton Split AC. I am totally confused in choosing the brand. Few of my friends suggest Carrier and few suggest LG, Hitachi, O General. Can you please suggest the best brand to go with. I am living in chennai (not coastal & not much pollution) outskirts.

  9. Hi,

    Thanks for such helpful article.

I am planning to purchase AC for my living room. My living and Kitchen are adjacent rooms , separation wall is there but no door.
Living size is around 13*12 and mine the top floor. My city is Pune, climate will be hot for 3-4 months within year.

    Please suggest good Split AC.
Will the adjacent rooms without door will create any issue? What should be the capacity?
Do the star ratings lasts long (durable) for years ?
Do you have any information/experience of carrier and electrolux brand ac’s ?

    • Bipin,

      1. Suggest you to get a curtain in place to keep cooling in effect if room is not properly covered from all sides.
      2. Capacity : You can take a call by discussion with friends in the same locality to get a feeler as per the temp. in pune.
      3. Star ratings are helpful. I cannot comment on years as i am not aware of it.
      4. No clue on specific brands.

      All the best. 🙂
