Amritsar Foodie Weekend

This trip was over my mind for about 3 years. But finally Amritsar Foodie Weekend began on 26th April, 2013. I have always been over excited to have good food and Amritsar was a destination so reachable, yet seemed far. From the lame excuses to visit Amritsar only in winters to office being hectic; I had given all possible reasons to skip my trip. However, it’s was past and trip happened.

All travel options (Car, Bus, Train, and Airline) are good. I chose train and boarded Shatabdi from New Delhi Railway Station. It’s the best option to choose with trains. However, over the years the service and infrastructure has gone really bad. I would suggest traveling in executive class considering it’s a 6 hour journey.

Besides food, on my check list, I had a few places to visit in Amritsar. Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh & Wagha Border. However, my prime focus was food. The challenge lied in experiencing the entire variety of food in Amritsar over the weekend. It’s practically impossible.


So, here’s a description (short-n-smart) about a foodie trip to Amritsar:

  1. 1st morning in Amritsar and headed to Kanha Sweets. It’s the place for breakfast with “Poori Choley” n “Lassi”. The sweet “Aloo” subzi is awesome and unique.
  2. Next was my visit to Jallianwala Bagh.
  3. I had no space room for lunch after the breakfast and hence gave it a pass.
  4. Picked up “Fruit Cream” ice cream from Durga Ice Cream parlor. Good one.
  5. Late afternoon and I headed to Wagha Border (Indo-Pak) for the evening parade show. It’s an awesome feeling there. Especially, when you see some foreigners dancing on Indian patriotic songs. 🙂
  6. On my way back, I stopped at “Sarhad”. It’s a restaurant near Wagha Border and serves Indo-Pak exquisite cuisines. The place has a couple of trucks at display which are hand painted by Haider Ali (World famous truck painter from Pakistan). Stop here for tea along with a quick snack.
  7. I drove back to Amritsar and was famished by now and rightly so as I headed to “Kesar Da Dhaba”. This place has some 100 years old Dal recipe. Tastes amazing a “Thali” is more than enough for 2. Have Palak Paneer on my recommendation. It’s like Paneer with “Rara Meat” gravy. Too good.
  8. It was 10 at night and we headed to Golden Temple. Perfect timing as there was a religious ceremony being performed at that time. The “Karhah Parsad” is killer.
  9. I had my breakfast next morning at the hotel.
  10. In the afternoon I headed to Surjit Chicken. This place is extremely famous for its Tandoori chicken. But the chicken was nothing out of the world types. I tried Amritsari fish and that was amazing. It’s again a must have in Amritsar.
  11. I wanted to have dessert and headed to Chocolate Room. “Chocolate Avalanche”, it’s a sin to miss this.
  12. Dinner time. I had heard a lot of Crystal restaurant. It’s an overcrowded and noisy place. But the “Paneer Tawa Frontier” is a nice dish. Overall, the restaurant is hyped.

Headed back to Delhi next morning and just ate salads after an onslaught of food in Amritsar.

I missed out on Amritsari Kulcha which gives me another reason to visit again. However, till that time, I can be content with the closest option in Delhi. Check out the following link.
