Throw Away That Plastic

Environmentalists have always derided use of plastic bags considering the harmful effect it has on our planet earth. The use of plastic bags continues to be a concern as a study reveals that plastic bags could take about 1000 years to decompose !!!

In late 2012, Delhi government slapped a blanket ban on use of plastic bags. Though the use of plastic still continues in our homes and offices; there are certain efforts that can be made at an individual level to make a difference. I am going to share my views on couple of scenarios in this regard.

It’s been a while since my involvement in grocery and domestic shopping for my family. Since the very beginning i have observed local vegetable vendors giving out vegetables in plastic bags. This continues till date. For instance, if you are buying 3-4 different items, chances are high that vendor uses equal no. of plastic bags. Basically one visit to vegetable vendor and a family consumes 3-4 plastic bags. I live in a colony with about 350 houses and about 700 families. Considering that every family shops vegetables once a week, we can conclude that around 2500 plastic bags are consumed. Even after considering a lower limit to this, the number for Delhi will be extremely high.

Another scenario is our regular visits to local market for adhoc shopping for domestic needs. We often end up without a carry bag. Either we forget to carry one or we end up at the market on our way back from office.

In order to overcome this, I went up to a plastic bags sales shop and asked for cloth bags. Luckily, I found something that was easy to use and implement. In the attached image below, there are 2 types of bags which are leveraged for regular vegetable sand domestic shopping.  These are easily available in the market and cost Rs. 140-160 per kg. I got a mix of both types and is serving me well so far. Also, I have kept a few in my car so they can be handy when required in case of any one of the scenario above.

Lastly, I certainly agree that use of plastic bags will continue till we find an alternative to the big bags that are used for dustbins in our home and work spaces  However, there’s no denying the fact that the method mentioned above can bring down usage of plastic bags. And with environment, every effort to save it is considerable !!!
